Yoga for Cardiac Health: 4 Week Series

This 4-week workshop series is specifically designed to help individuals with varying cardiovascular diseases and risk factors including: hypertension, artherosclerosis, angina pectoris, arrhythmia, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, heavy drinking, and high stress. It is appropriate for all levels of physical activity.
Each 90-minute session will include four components: short guided relaxation, physical movement (yoga asana), long guided relaxation, and breathing exercises (pranayama). The short guided relaxation will help participants to settle into the space and prepare the nervous system for focused movement. Each week, we will practice the same base sequence of gentle yoga postures, but as time goes on, more poses will be introduced. Chairs and props are provided, so the postures are modified to an appropriate level for all participants regardless of yoga experience. These poses help increase blood flow to the extremities and internal organs, and they support joint health and good posture. Following yoga asana, Whitney will guide students through a longer relaxation (20-25 min). This practice can help lower blood pressure and reduce stress, promoting more restful sleep and increased immune function. Lastly, we will practice breathing and meditation techniques that are wonderful tools for stress management. This portion, like the yoga asana, will grow as the series progresses.
Participants will leave this program empowered with skills to manage daily stress, nourish the nervous system, and promote overall health. Each student will receive a copy of the sequence of yoga postures, along with a recording for guided relaxation to be practiced at home.
For participants with cardiac disease, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Hypertension must be controlled
Angina pectoris must be stable/predictable
All surgical wounds must be healed
Wait at least 6 weeks following bypass surgery or MI
Please ask your doctor for a signed statement that you can sit or lay down for 30 minutes at a time and practice gentle movements of the arms, legs, neck, and spine.

Whitney is a registered yoga teacher, certified Yoga of the Heart® teacher, and certified yoga therapist based in Chicago, IL. She completed Inner Peace Yoga Therapy's 800-hour training in January 2018. Whitney was drawn to yoga therapy after suffering a back injury that prevented her from doing two of the things she loved most, running and asana. The injury caused an anxiety disorder to resurface, along with persistent sacral pain.
She now specializes in helping people with back pain, but also sees clients with various issues including cardiac disease and cancer. Whitney teaches full time through a blend of group classes, individual therapy sessions, and workshops, and she co-leads a local 200-hour teacher training. Outside of yoga, her passions include cats and the Green Bay Packers.
